I have to admit that Maplin is the one gadget store I usually stay well clear off.  It’s grim, grey and usually full of ham radio nerds.  It’s a place when you can hang out with leads, wires, resistors, diodes, and power transformers instead of girls and gadge.    But it also has some neat little toy-tools such as this USB Digital Microscope.

It’s really a convergence of a child and executive toy, combined with the geekiness of a science lesson. An ideal Christmas present for the man who has everything, I’m sure you’ll agree.

This USB microscope is well designed, cheap, and works surprisingly well. With it’s 400x magnification, and built-in LED ring you can illuminate even he smallest object. 

You’ll find yourself spending, erm,  minutes looking at anything and everything in the micro-world.  What better use is there for a USB port on your PC? It’s not exactly scientific,  but you can soon build up an amazing collection of microscopic photos.
