Create desktop links to OneNote pages and paragraphs Having a large electronic notepad using OneNote has many advantages,  but one of the key challenges is finding that all important page or paragraph.  However,  other than relying on the search features, there is a little known feature which allows you to bookmark a page or paragraph, so you can quickly get back to it.

By making use of the intrinsic hyperlinking functions in OneNote,  it is very easy to create a desktop link to a page, subpage, paragraph or even specific word.

Begin by locating the part of the document you want to create a link to.  If this is a specific piece of text you need highlight it in the usual way (left-click and drag),  if it’s a page or sub-page in OneNote you just need to hover over it.   Next,  you right click and look for the menu item “Copy Hyperlink to this Page”, or “Copy Hyperlink to this Paragraph”,  and click the menu item. That will copy an encoded link to your clipboard.

Next, you need to create a desktop shortcut.  You begin this by right clicking on the desktop and selecting New > Shortcut,  which will then prompt you with a dialogue box. Into the textbox labelled “Type the location of the item”,  use CTRL-V to paste the link to the item in OneNote you just created into the box and click Next.

On the next dialog you can then enter the name of the link to the item in OneNote, and click Finish.

You’ll then have a icon on your Desktop with a link to a OneOne document or paragraph.  Click this link and it will link you to exactly the right position in a document in OneNote.
